Male mortality due to malignant neoplasm of the prostate in the municipality of São Luís, Maranhão, during the period 2010-2018
Abstract
The objective was to analyze male mortality due to malignant prostate neoplasm in the municipality of São Luís, Maranhão, during the period from 2010 to 2018. This is a descriptive, exploratory, retrospective, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, conducted in the database of the Department of Information Technology of the Unified Health System. The sample consisted of publicly available data on 1,329 deaths of male patients from malignant prostate neoplasm reported between 2010 and 2018 in São Luís, Maranhão. A form was used as the data collection instrument, and the data were discussed according to simple non-parametric and non-probabilistic descriptive epidemiology. A high prevalence of deaths reported by occurrence was observed (59.3%). Regarding socioeconomic and demographic aspects, deaths of elderly individuals aged 70-79 years (38.2%); those who self-identified as mixed race (46.3%); those with only basic education (24.2%); and married individuals (56.5%) prevailed. In 85.23% of cases, the place of death was in the hospital. Regarding the period of occurrence and notification of these deaths, it can be observed that it was most prevalent in 2017 during the month of January. It is concluded that socioeconomic and demographic factors have a significant impact on the increased prevalence of male mortality from malignant prostate neoplasm.
