Abstract

Introduction: Bacterial resistance has become a serious public health problem, aggravated by the indiscriminate use of antibiotics, which favors the emergence of superbugs. Objectives: To evaluate the use of bacteriophages as a therapeutic alternative in the fight against multidrug-resistant bacteria. Methods: Integrative literature review; searches in the SciELO, BVS and PubMed databases for studies in Portuguese published between January 2019 and December 2024. 23 initial articles were identified; after applying inclusion/exclusion criteria and critical reading, 9 articles were selected for analysis. The synthesis considered evidence on the efficacy, safety and limitations of phage therapy. Results: The 9 selected studies indicated the efficacy of phage therapy against multidrug-resistant pathogens such as MRSA, with preservation of beneficial microbiota. The obstacles pointed out include the need for customization of phages, formulation/transport challenges and potential host immune response. Conclusion: Phage therapy is a promising strategy in combating bacterial resistance, but its clinical consolidation requires more research, standardization of protocols, and investments in translational development.
